Since this got bumped up close to the top again, I think I'll add that I decided to try playing with a catcher for one more week. I picked up Buck because the team I'm going against is a great power team, and then he goes and hits a pair of jacks last night.
There were some good points brought up, and I can't remember who it was that said it, but a catcher can potentially help you in 4 cats while hurting you in only 1. I decided to apply that logic and it has helped a lot so far.

try to play in a roto league with no catcher

see where that gets you.
this is just another reason why i'm not a fan of h2h leagues. Having the ability to punt positions and or categories and still be able to compete every week.
Personally I would rather have a catcher at all times, even if it's a bad one. Like others stated, when you don't start a catcher you're potentially losing out on 4 other categories. I do understand it's from a h2h perspective, and in some weeks a catcher may verywell go 1 for 20 with no other helpful statistics. It's hard to pick a side.

Again, it depends on the situation. In 5x5 HTH if your power numbers are good, the extra couple runs and rbi and a chance for a HR or two may barely be worth the low average. If there's someone out there on the wire with a lot of value or a lot of potential value, it's a lot of times better for you team to go in that direction.
If you end up losing a point here or there in May or June, odds are that won't make or break your season. But you could end up picking up a guy like Accardo, who I dropped my starting C for, that later in the season (now) ends up having a lot more value for you.
If you make the playoffs it only matters what your lineup looks like at the end.
