Conte just rejoined the club along with his prize patient, Jason Schmidt, and the speculation continues over when, and particularly where, Schmidt will next pitch, especially with Mark Hendrickson slumping.
Little said Schmidt will throw a bullpen session Saturday, after which a decision would be made. The timing of the session would line him up to pitch a game Tuesday in San Diego, where Hendrickson is currently slotted.
"I'm not ruling anything out," said Little. "If he's ready to pitch, we want him back as quickly as possible."
Conte said Schmidt's lone rehab outing Wednesday, after six weeks on the disabled list with shoulder bursitis, couldn't have gone better from warmup, to the 71 pitches, to the way he's rebounded since.
"He deserves a promotion out of A-ball," Conte joked. "With certain injuries, rehab games are important to increase the intensity on the injured area, but that's not necessarily the case with Schmidt. It sure wouldn't bother me for him to have another rehab game. In San Bernardino, we saw the same life on the fastball we saw in his bullpen simulated games. I was pleased with his stamina, he could have gone more than 71 pitches. But we can't put his shoulder in jeopardy."
