"Things are so bad that Matt Holliday, the top run producer, was so frustrated after he popped up on the first pitch with one out and runners on first and third in the third inning that he injured himself. When he tried to bang himself on the head with his helmet, he instead slashed his head by hitting it with the bill. While the Rockies downplayed the seriousness of Holliday's injury, it was severe enough that he came out of the game."

so much drama in the dugout yesterday..

I laughed when I read the story of the brim of the helmet. Here I am all worried for the guy. Did he accidentally get hit with a swinging bat? Did his metal cleats slip walking down the dugout stairs and crack the back of his head? Is he speaking in tongues now? Etc.

Then you hear it is self-inflicted with a batting helmet? :-B

If the "gash from the helmet brim" is true then I doubt it. It sounds like something that would require stiches and a padded bandade over it.

Unless he loss lots of blood and or gave himself a concussion it sounds like he should be fine.

Despite having Holliday, I still think him getting hurt in the dugout is one of the funniest injuries I've ever seen. Then again, other than Renteria, he's been my only consistant offensive player all year.

These quotes from Helton lead me to believe that the "gash" story is NOT true:

''Well, he bumped his head in the dugout. Hard enough where we had to bring him out of the game,'' manager Clint Hurdle said. ''That's all I got.''

Holliday leads the Rockies, who are in the basement of the NL West, with a .347 batting average, 10 homers and 43 RBIs. Before leaving the game, he singled to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

''I saw him right afterwards, and it looked pretty painful,'' first baseman Todd Helton told the Rockies' team Web site. ''It was on the top of his head. It was a cantaloupe, grapefruit, I don't know. Pick one of those oversized fruit.''

Ditto. Tack on Barrett and Beltran for good measure.
