They are shorter, lighter versions of a baseball bat. They are normally used in fielding drills when a coach (or whomever) throws the ball up and hits it.

A fungo is used by coaches to hit groundballs and flyballs in practice. They are usually longer and lighter than a regular game bat. Usually around 36-37" and around 20 oz (for wood fungos).

They are longer and lighter to allow the fungo hitter to hit many balls without swinging the weight of a game bat. It would get very tiring hitting fungos with a game bat, although it can be done.

You can hit the ball a mile with one of those...you just cant have it pitched to you or it will break, you gotta throw it to yourself.

It is longer and lighter so you may hit balls repeatedly and with high accuracy.
