Just wanted to chime back in.

Mencia and Cook do suck.

Hedberg and Gaffigan are great.

That's a great call, man. Leary is someone I completely forgot to mention on my shortlist. "No Cure For Cancer" might be one of the best comedy DVD's in my collection. Reading what people had to say about Mitch Hedberg reminds me of another comic who died far before his time...

George Carlin is so freakin funny! He is IMO so far above everyone else in comedy.

David Cross
George Carlin (His older stuff, he's gotten a little too old and cynical)
Denis Leary (His HBO special Lock and Load is still one of my favorites)
Dane Cook (Up yours, I still like him)
Patton Oswalt
Lewis Black
Brian Posehn
Zach Galifianakis
Maria Bamford
Jim Gaffigan
Mitch Hedburg

I'm not big into the whole Blue Collar comedy thing, but Ron White is funny from time to time. Also I thought Rodney Carrington's Comedy Central special was actually pretty funny.

I really liked 'No Cure For Cancer' as well. But then I heard Bill Hicks and realized that practically that entire routine was ripped almost directly from Hicks. I lost a lot of respect for Leary after that.

I think comedians rip off material all the time. Hell if you watch Robin Williams Live on Broadway, he ripped a bunch of it from Eddie Izzard's Dressed to Kill.

I know that lots of guys have jokes that are very similar to others, but Leary's rip off of Hicks is unprecedented. It's probably the most famous rip-off in stand up history.
