I was drafting live with my younger brother's friends and they're in that stage where its the slugging power outfielders that are the "best player in baseball", I was helping my brother out and we drew first pick overall and of course without hesitation I took the best player in baseball, A-Rod, and one of my little brother's friends pipes up with
"Oh this must be Bill [my little bro] picking because Rick [me] isn't stupid enough to pick A-Rod first overall"
I just laughed you know during all of those 57 homeruns
We had a guy say "Who is (insert player name here-I think it was the one handed pitcher from the ChiSox - what was his name?)?" - After we pointed out his picture on the cover of a fantasy mag, the guy says "Oh, I'll go $10 on him".
We have NEVER let him live this down ...
Also, the year Mattlingly retired, the owner that had him protected him anyway - I guess he thought it was a nice rememebrence - stupid. BUT - the best part was that during the draft, one of the owners kept turning to the guy who protected Mattingly (Mike) and saying - "Can you believe that Eric protected Mattingly? What an idiot!" After the fifth or sixth time, Mike stood up and shouted - "I'm not going to say this again - I'm the idiot!"
Guess you had to be there ...
"Life is tough. But it is even tougher when you're stupid." - John Wayne
Jim Abbott the one-handed pitcher? i dont think he was ever on the white sox but he's the only one-handed pitcher ive ever heard of. you've been playing fantasy for a long time, eh?
i'm the main trash-talker during our leagues drafts...
my best line ever was about 3 or 4 years ago when someone was ECSTATIC to get Randy Winn for $1 and didn't understand why nobody else bid on him.
"you're all crazy....he'll steal 50 bases," said the poor deluded soul.
"yeah...in triple A" i shot back.
much laughter was had by all. to the point that nobody drafted randy winn ever again, even last year. when someone finally picked him up mid-season last year i sent them a condolence card.
when he made the ALL-STAR TEAM (ugh) the original owner i mocked (who is no longer in the league) actually called me up and said "see...i TOLD YOU randy winn was good."
We have a gentleman's agreement that if a guy tries to draft a player that's recently been injured or something, to tell him and he can pick again if he wants. It usually only matters in the late rounds for players that don't get much ink. One guy tried to draft Dave Nilson, and we told him that he was going to be playing in Austrailia that year. He chose somebody else...
Two rounds later, the same guy tried to pick Dave Nilson again.
For some reason, the same guy has drafted Alfonseca the past three years, which is funny in itself. But every year he says, "I'll take the six fingered man, Antonio Alfonsucka." It always gets a chuckle from me.
