How paranoid to be about CP's??

How paranoid to be about CP's??

Postby ROC AllStars » Fri May 25, 2007 10:09 am

I got burned earlier this year with BJ Ryan. I grabbed Benitez to fill that spot, but ever since I've been paranoid about his injury problems. With so many teams using committees, there are literally NO full time closers available in my league. I've been toying with the idea of carrying Hennessey to back up Benitez, but I hate to waste a bench spot on someone with NO value if Benitez stays healthy. How paranoid should a manager be about hedging his bets? Thanks in advance.

similar concerns.....

I'm pretty new at this but have been in a similar situation all season. The only decent closer I received in our autodraft on Yahoo was Chad Cordero. Does he even have 5 Saves yet? Dumped him a couple weeks back for Accardo. Also snagged Dan Wheeler from Houston early and he does o-k but nothing spectacular. Grabbed Wickman last week off the DL.

Q: to add to the first post........what about just giving up on the Saves category and choosing another starter OR some good middle reliever like Meredith in SD and go for extra help in Ks, ERA, and Whip????
Mr. Flesher on this forum advised trading a good hitter for a good closer. Have you thought about that? Hitters are certainly more available from week to week.

IMO, it doesn't pay to be paranoid and waste bench spots on backups unless you're in a really deep league.

Find someone with value to use the bench spot on, and then hope that:
a) Benitez stays healthy, or
b) If he gets hurt, you hear about it first.

A middle reliever with solid ratios would be a good pickup, and often those type of MRs are the backup relievers anyways. (See Shields, Scot)

saves will always come available in Free agency and i can guarentee there will be at least 3 good closers that will somehow emerge the rest of the year, so i say dont give up good hitting for a closer
