Our league has a lottery pick system. We keep 5 plus 1 lottery pick (a pick after the 20th round or rook). My friend traded for the #1 waiver priority just a few days ago with the intention of claiming Gallardo.
He will be away for the weekend and I have a strong feeling that he won't know that Gallardo is in the database (otherwise I think he would have said something). Would it be wrong to not say anything to him and claim Gallardo?

I see it as a competition. It's not like you're backstabbing him or anything and why should it be up to you to keep him, your competition, informed? I mean if you told your friends what moves you're planning to make, what players you're keeping a watch on, etc etc then what's the point.
You're only responsible for your team. If another owner isn't aware of something going on in the league, that's his fault. If you benefit from it, so much the better.
Yoda a side of you I've never seen. Since you're in a friendly mood and he's away for the weekend. I'd pick him up and trade him for the #1 priority but you'd probably be booted for collusion.

It amazes me sometimes the depths people will go to to win at fantasy baseball
I know but even if he didn't tell me, I would have leaned towards claiming Gallardo anyway. In that case, I wouldn't have told anyone and quietly picked him up.

That's exactly why when I talk about fantasy with my friends I tell them to not tell me who they're watching or who they intend to pick up. Then I can't be blamed when I pick up a player that they were watching. If he told you that he was going to use the #1 waiver for him then I think you have to let him know or even if you don't, you can't pick him up. If he pretty much told you his plans and you go behind him and basically ruin his plans after he tells you then you're essentially doing a sneaky underhanded move. Whether you were going to pick up Gallardo anyways even if he did or did not tell you doesn't matter at this point, I think the point is that he DID tell you so in his mind you're going to be stealing his idea/plans.
