Most Overrated Players of All-Time

Postby bigh0rt » Tue May 22, 2007 11:49 am

Jayson Stark was on Mike & Mike earlier today and he listed his All-Time Most Overrated Players at each position. Some I think he nailed dead on, but others have me scratching my head. What do you think?

C - Mike Piazza
1B - Steve Garvey
2B - Steve Sax
3B - Graig Nettles
SS - Phil Rizzuto
LF - Lou Brock
CF - Andruw Jones
RF - Dave Winfield
DH - Ron Blomberg

RHP - Nolan Ryan
LHP - Sandy Koufax
CL - Lee Smith

I'd probably say Carlton Fisk over Piazza, Craig Biggio over Steve Sax, and Frank Baker over Graig Nettles. I'm also not sure about Blomberg as the most overrated DH as all I know about him is that he was a Yankee and the first ever DH, but beyond that, I hear nothing about the guy ever, so I'm not sure how overrated he could be...

Piazza is the greatest offensive catcher of all time ...

No way this guy is overrated.

Rizzuto is definitely the most overrated on that list.

I would put Bernie Williams up there as well. He was a good player but way over hyped. I think he is more overrated in CF than Jones.

I would want Jeter as the starting SS on my overrated team.

Bernie was extremely clutch but I don't think he's overrated. No one really talks about him as the best player of his time or anything.

Then again how is Andruw Jones overrated? he hits bombs and is a nasty CF'er

You're seriously right about the Blomberg selection. I have vivid memories of the guy, because this is the period when I was becoming a huge Yankee fan, and Boomer actually played minor league ball in my town. But the guy's been barely mentioned the last 35 years.

I'd like to see the logic for the Koufax selection. This is one case where I don't even want to see the word "longevity."
