Giambi trade/drug rumors

Postby BillyHallDisciple » Tue May 22, 2007 9:22 am

Here's an item I saw on Rotoworld this morning. Intriguing, but I wonder how likely it would be. Also, I'm trying to imagine Chone Figgins on the Yankees - what would they do with him anyways?

Of course it's all speculation and 90% of the time these rumors never materialize, but it's fun to think about anyways -

Rotoworld:

According to the New York Post, the Angels "have an interest in acquiring" Jason Giambi.

It seems like odd timing given the headlines Giambi made earlier this week regarding steroids, and the newspaper suggests that the Angels' interest started "before the recent controversy surfaced." Within the story, Chone Figgins and Jose Molina are suggested as possibly being targeted by the Yankees, but any return for Giambi would depend largely on how much of his contract they were willing to eat.

Figgins kills the Yankees, so I guess his role would be to sit on the bench so they don't have to play against him anymore.

But unless Bill Stoneman has Figgins on his fantasy team and he wants Giambi from Cashman's team, this trade makes no sense. The Yankees don't need salary relief that badly. They'd be better for keeping Giambi's bat in the lineup and waiting until he's a free agent at the end of next season if that's all they can get for him.

I have trouble believing anyone would want to touch Giambi right now even if the Yankees eat a majority of the contract.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Maybee figgins can be brought in to bunt for Torre since no one else on the team can apparently do that especially in the playoffs

Stupid idea.

Figgins really isn't that good.

Keep Giambi. His OBP alone makes him worth keeping.

Yeah NYP is by far the worst source of any information. I think the National Enquirer is more credible at times.

Giambi isn't going anywhere. It's been well documented that the Yanks are desperate to get rid of him and his salary. They won't get anyone worth anything back for him.

NY Post? Nuff said. Way I see it, they've held on to Giambi this long might as well keep him if all you're getting back is Figgins and Molina and no salary relief.

I just saw an article in Injuries and Player Updates that says the Yanks are considering voiding his contract... if they're actually thinking of doing that, why wouldn't they consider a trade as well?
