Hold?

Hold?

Postby akula » Mon May 21, 2007 8:48 pm

can someone explain to me what counts as a Hold? how come sometimes a RP can get a hold even if his team loses at the end?

I believe a hold is any time a relief pitcher pitches and does not blow the lead prior to save situation - in which case the same scenario results in a save instead of a hold.

^ doesn't have anything to do with a save situation.

a hold is when an RP:

1. enters the game with his team winning
2. logs at least one out
3. exits the game with his team winning

if the next pitcher blows the lead, it's irrelevant. that's how a guy can get a hold in a loss.

Does it matter how big/little of a lead he has?

no, it doesnt matter how large the lead is, what inning it is, or whether the team wins or loses.

but you cant be the last pitcher of the game.

Actually, the size of the lead does matter because to get a Hold a pitcher must: enter the game in a save situation, meaning 7th inning or later and with his team leading, but leading by no more than three runs. He must record at least one out and leave the game with the lead intact.

A hold is pretty much the same as a save except the pitcher is not the last pitcher of the game and doesnt finish the game.
