That's what's confusing me. What kind of purpose can be defeated by hitting the ball on the ground? It's definitely not because it's a signed ball (although that would have been my first guess as well). Ok so the purpose of a Hank Aaron ball is to hit it in the air. Why? Is it a ball hit high into the stadium so the visitors can catch it and keep it as a souvenir?

Oh, darn, why didn't I think of this before. This is even more crazy but...is a Hank Aaron ball a walk off home run ball where the runner isn't able to finish his tour of the bases because fans run onto the field or because the winning run scores and he doesn't need to finish running around the bases? This has happened more than once that I can remember.
Ok this is somewhat of a illogical guess...how about a batting practice fastball?

England's Worcester Canoe Club set the world record for paddling a hand-propelled bathtub. The 25 man team covered a distance of 55 miles, 425 yards in 24 hours on September 28 and 29, 1979.
Let's see... The spectators do have something to do with this... Batting practice isn't the right time to use a Hank Aaron ball... I suppose you might use them in home run derbies - I'm afraid I don't know whether that's ever been down - but it's not the purpose they were originally conceived for...
