This diamond mine in eastern Siberia (Mirny, to be exact) is so deep that the surrounding "air zone... is closed for helicopters" after "a few accidents when they were 'sucked in' by downward air flow..."
The tiny red arrow in the photograph is pointing to a 220-ton rock-hauling truck more than 20' tall.
I'm not impressed. We have bigger holes at the Cafe.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
you don't need the truck, just look at the housing project towers behind it!! That's pretty amazing. I wonder if the 'hill' at the upper right of the 'above' shot is what they dug out of it?
Someone needs to find a Google Earth image of this; I'll make it my mission... standby
Never mind, it's in the middle of Siberia so it's very low-res. What's interesting though is that the community surrounding it is there just to support this mine in the middle of nowhere. There doesn't seem to be much civilization for nearly thousands of square miles outside this mining community.
If you're a battery, you're either working or you're dead....
