I'm pretty sure saves were not invented back then. I think they were introduced in the nineties.
Saves have been around since before the 90's....

I will quit watching baseball if people start throwing like that. Girls fastpitch will be less of a joke.

If you had a time machine, you'd know that the save as a statistic was officially introduced in 1970, but was clearly tracked prior to that.
