I have him on the DL in my Yahoo league, and I was wondering if I can keep him there until I find out if he's closing or not. Only then would I choose to drop him or hang on to him... does this work? I've never tried it...

Yahoo will let you leave him in the DL spot even after he's off the DL so long as you don't make any other moves. Once you try to add, drop or trade someone, if he's off the DL you will have to remove him from the DL first.
