NY Times misquoted Stu in an article about the Trop having a shelf life of only 5 years. Stu contacted the local papers to say that he was misquoted. He has said all along it has a shelf life of 5-20 years. He has said before time and time again that he will not force anyone to build him a new stadium for the team. He would like one to be built in the future that has a retractable roof, but it won't be for a little while. He has not asked for public money and he may never ask for it, it honestly doesn't need it, he can get private money, which he may do.
damn new yorkers.
but of course most of us fans would love a new stadium.
preferably over here in tampa.
but i love the trop too, even though its like playing in a warehouse,
but we will never get an all-star game or top attendance.
New ownership--check
New set of players--check
New stadium--hopefully on the way
New AL East team to beat--hopefully on the way
I would honestly love to see a new stadium pronto. The Trop just has too much of the old regime in it for me. In a perfect world, I would love to see a new stadium be opened up in 2009 followed with a World Series Championship the same year. I completely understand the economics of not building a new stadium though, but I really believe if Sternberg wants to lively up the Trop, he needs to go in there this offseason a spend a load of cash on different things. He should make a boat load of money this year with our payroll only in the $20 million range along with the money we get from the Yanks and Sox for being over the limit.

Stu has already put 20 million of his own money into the Trop. Also, any of the money they are making on the team is in an account that is going to be used to re-sign Scotty, Delmon, etc. and also get FA's. Thing is, he would not have put 20 mill in it already if he was going to get a new stadium soon. He will get a new one and he may pay for it by his own means

That is great that he has already spent big time money on the Trop, but he needs to spend a bit more and make it even more fan friendly. Use Disney World, the beach, the college students down there in April, whatever he can use to make the Trop a much more inviting place to sit and watch a ballgame. The Devil Rays even if they do become a dynasty in a few years, will struggle for fans to some extent just due to everything else that Florida has going for it, and also the way they were run in the 90s will not be forgotten by some fans for a while. Basically for the Drays to flourish, there has to be excitement at the ball park to go along with excitement with the team that Upton, Crawford, Baldelli, Kazmir, Niemann and many others will provide.
I guess in the end it all comes down to how badly he wants a retractable roof.
i still say a stadium in tampa on the water in downtown would nice.
but exspensive.
but think about it this way, all the money they make from tickets food and stuff is all profit except for the electric and water bill
because they get more than the team salary from luxury taxes.
and vince namoli was pocketing that and thats why we never had a competative team.
