things you don't see in the box score

Postby rotoquest » Tue May 08, 2007 6:11 am

Yesterday, I watched the indians game, and with two outs and a man on 1st & 2nd, casey blake hit a routine groundball to the shortstop for an easy play at second. However, barfield showed tremendous hustle in beating the throw to second. It turned out to be huge because the next batter hafner then hit a grandslam. This is a case where the boxscore shows the grandslam by hafner, but not the hustle of barfield to keep the inning alive. I was wondering if other people have similar observations of events that don't show up in the boxscore? Please share.

Tim Lincecum and Cole Hamels getting squeezed badly the first 3-4 innings on Sunday don't show up, Lincecum getting pounded showed up.

I don't have any specific examples but that's just the nature of the boxscore. It's not meant to be a specific storyline of the game.

To be fair, he did score a run as a result. Any talk of 'things that don't show up in the boxscore' reminds me far too much of Joe Morgan.

That's why I'd rather watch the game than read the box score (although I do a lot of that too!).

Victorino being an a-hole on Sunday night didn't show up in the box score.

Yep exactly. What about bench clearing brawls? Most exciting play in baseball. They should let the players duke it out hockey style instead of guys throwing gloves at each other. That would be awesome.

Barfield better be running hard, he isn't doing much else at the plate. !+)

The Victorino thing was dumb too. Had he kept running the direction he was running when he ran into Vizquel, he'd have run to third and skipped second base. !+)

Is that true? If so, that's a bit of a bright spot to us nervouse Lince owners.

Anyone else see the game, cuz i didn't.

Yes, it's true. Also Hughes got shelled in his debut and had a no hitter through 6 1/3 in his 2nd start. Don't worry about him just yet.
