Why cant there be a lefthanded catcher?

It's just more difficult for them to throw runners out, because they have to adjust their motion to avoid right-handed batters (as do righty catchers with lef handed batters). Since there are way more right handed betters than left handers, it makes more sense to have a righty cather.

i doubt there will ever be a lefthanded throwing 2b, ss, or 3b for a very long time either.

I think this might be the biggest reason.

Another reason there are no left-handed catchers today may be simply because there are few, if any, left-handed catcher's mitts available to young players. Virtually all left-handed mitts have to be top-of-the-line gloves specially ordered.

If the little leaguers can't get a hold of a left handed catching glove, they can never learn to become a great catcher and have a chance to become a pro.

To be a catcher you have to have a halfway decent arm to throw out basestealers and chance are if you are lefthanded and have a halfway decent arm you'll end up as a pitcher not a catcher. Hope that makes sense.

It doesn't really make sense; I was a catcher in high school and I had a hell of an arm to 2nd base. I could sail the ball in there on a line right into the shortstop's glove.

But I couldn't "pitch" to save my life.

That said, I think lefty baseball players are often groomed to be pitchers at a young age simply because there's such a premium on them. Southpaw pitchers could be the quickest path to the majors nowadays.

Lefty catchers would be at a large disadvantage while trying to throw out a guy stealing third. Having to completely move their bodies around to get in position would let the base stealer reach third safely more often than not. Righty catchers don't have that problem. It's not like anyone can steal first or anything.
