It doesn't really make sense; I was a catcher in high school and I had a hell of an arm to 2nd base. I could sail the ball in there on a line right into the shortstop's glove.
But I couldn't "pitch" to save my life.
That said, I think lefty baseball players are often groomed to be pitchers at a young age simply because there's such a premium on them. Southpaw pitchers could be the quickest path to the majors nowadays.
