Keeper setup suggestions

Postby mrbo » Fri May 04, 2007 12:59 pm

I have a group of friends who have played in the same redraft league for a few years now. We decided to start a keeper this year but it was very poorly planned before the draft. As it stands now our only rules for keepers are: (This is a 16 team H2H)

(3 keepers, 3 years). You lose the round you draft the keeper at, if you pick your keeper off waivers you lose your last pick. The keepers draft position goes down 1 spot for each concurrent year.

They wanted to keep it simple, but I think this simple setup is going to cause problems in the future.

- With only 3 keepers there isnt much (any?) incentive to keep rookies or late picks/pickups

- It seems to be that everyone is likely to keep their early round picks

Any suggestions on changes we could make? From what I've read most keepers seem to use an auction/salary cap method for protection. Another possibility I was thinking of was instead of us picking any 3 players as keepers, the teams would have to keep 1 batter, 1 pitcher and 1 rookie or something.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

an owner in my league posted a suggestion for our keeper system. I like it better than the simple 'any 3 keepers' we currently have.

what about this.. nice and simple:

Split the players up into 3 groups-

Group A- players drafted rounds 1-7.

Group B- players drafted rounds 8-14.

Group C- players drafted rounds 15-22 AND Free Agent/ Waiver Wire pickups.

you can keep (if you want- you don't have to keep anyone):

1 from Group A. 1 from Group B. 2 from Group C.

This puts most of the top guys back in the pool and makes you try and find late round gems and good free agents.

We can work out the length of how long.. lets just agree on this part first.. what do you guys think of this system?

Just looking for any other suggestions you guys might have. Id like to learn from some of your mistakes before we make our own :)

That is a good idea. It makes it competitive while still rewarding good drafters who found late value.
