Snakes on a plane is the only movie i have ever really been to were people (not me) cheered at various parts during the movie. Now that i am thinking about it at a couple of times i can remember cheering in a couple big movie opening nights. I assume that the critics are at the opening night or seek previews, so that is why they probably hear cheering or applauding.
"I do not think baseball of today is any better than it was 30 years ago... I still think Radbourne is the greatest of the pitchers." John Sullivan 1914-Old athletes never change.
See, I get the applause and cheering when the filmakers are almost obviously in the room. It's polite to applaud their good work.
But at the Cinema 18 in Leeds, Alabama on a Thusrday night? I doubt Tobey Maguire was hiding behind the curtain.
Maybe it's just a leftover, passed on tradition from the stage days, when everyone went to plays (as they were all there was) and the actors could hear the audience and get feedback on their performances.

There's two situations that come to mind and both have been touched on. At the end of a particularly good film in an arthouse cinema, it's not uncommon for the audience to applaud.
Also, in my personal experience, I enjoy watching summer blockbusters/action/horror/stupid comedy movies at a pretty ghetto theatre in downtown Brooklyn. The audience, screams, laughs, whoops etc along with the movie and it makes it a more fun overall experience (for me at least).
So the answer is yes: at good movies and also if you're a racialist
i actually see this quite frequently (and i HATE it...it's like, who are you clapping to?). maybe it's a suburban Detroit thing, or maybe it's just because i go and see alot of big blockbusters on opening night in a sold out theatre

I had a friend back in high school who actually bawled when Rose threw away the necklace into the sea at the end.
I think films with cult geeky followings like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings follow up with plenty of applause and hollering. I fondly remember having my Dad tag along to watch Star Wars III and him being an old feller, didn't understand why virtually the whole theater was abuzz with Yoda fighting Palpatine. I said something to the effect of, "who wouldn't cheer a little green whuzzit kicking ass". I, for one, find it comical, but I digress. All the while, there was this old guy up front who had a hacking cough throughout the duration of the movie.
Other than that, I haven't seen much applause for any other movie I've gone out to see. As for myself, I'm a pretty reserved person and so no cheering or any of the like during a film.
Number one was Snakes on a Plane where whenever Sam Jackson said something people clapped and laughed... I guess it was funny . . .
And number 2 was at "Still We Believe" The Red Sox movie that I think was only in theatres in Boston, They showed Aaron boone hit the walkoff homer in the ALCS and everyone was booing and someone was yelling "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" as he run up the aisle and out the door. It was pretty funny.
