When a guy puts up as many K's as he does, I think he's legit. Still I might ride him for a while and then sell on him right before July, that's when he starts facing the Yankees, Red Sox & Blue Jays from what I hear.
thats usually the test for many up and comers is facing clubs with sick hitting, sox are notorious for coming up empty facing a new pitcher but the yanks can light a guy up in an inning but i read up on him and they say hes gotta problem with the HR ball but thats it, im diggin his K's though thats for sure
According to Buster Olney, last year hitters would sit on his changeup and jack it out of the park. From his article it sounds like Jamie is making the adjustments to mix up his pitches and be less predictable.
He's keeping his walks down which will always help too.
I read that he gained a few MPH on his fastball this season. Along with his filthy change up, the added velocity gives him more variance in speeds that could make a big difference in his overall numbers.
I will probably bench him against the Yanks, BJs and Sox until he proves himself.

He has always kept his walks down. He just doesn't walk guys. Last year in AAA he had something lke 62 K and 6 BB before coming up.
Last year he started off well than the guys adjusted and he went through a rough patch, he adjusted and finished strong. He has had only 1 bad outing this year. The guy pitches with a fire and wants to win every time out there. His change up is sick and he is mixing in his fastball and curve to complement it.
He is legit in my view, at least in the sense that he is a guy who should be rostered in even in leagues that are not very deep. There was even a modest level of hype around him in the pre-season, so his success so far is not something that was completely unforeseen.
He will not be a 2.00 ERA guy all season - he plays in a tough divsion where even the best SPs get lit up now and again. However, he should be a good bet to turn in an ERA of 4.00 or hopefully a little less and a really nice K rate. Interestingly, this is more or less what can be expected of some higher profile guys, for example Bonderman - so it is not unreasonble to assert that a more Ws is the only difference between Shields and Bonderman, who is at least a consensus top 20 fantasy SP.

what is wrong with TB that they cant get wins, is the bullpen just really bad, cause if Shields is for real they have him and kazmir, and there hitting is really good

They can probably win somewhere around 70-75 games this year. Their offense is good even though it is young and will struggle at times. They have 2 pretty solid starting pitchers, but what they lack is SP #3-5 and a bullpen. They have absolutely the worst pen in the majors, even though Reyes has been outstanding so far this year.
