According to the link above, the Phillies' first 162-game season was 1962. But I know the Yankees played 162 in 1961 - that's why there was the "asterisk" beside Maris' record. Did the NL go to 162 later? Can't imagine that - I'm confused!

The Phillies were founded back in the 1800s, so the have had like a 130 years to accomulate all those loses.

By the way, it's just normal that this milestone should first be reached by a baseball team, since they play 2 times more games than basketball and hockey and 10 times more than football...
And yes, the AL went to 162 games in 1961, the NL a year later. The extended schedule coincided with expansion in both leagues, getting each from 8 to 10 teams (AL 1961: LA Angels and Washington Senators, NL 1962: NY Mets and Houston Colt .45s).
