I confess I haven't seen the film, and it looks like that goes for quite a few people. Could you fill us in? I'm probably missing something cool here...

High Fidelity is a John Cusack film from a couple of years ago based on a book by Nick Hornby (Hornsby? - the guy also wrote About a Boy). It's about a guy who owns a record store and his complete inability to maintain a relationship.

The three guys who work in the store (Cusack and his two employees) have some classic scenes that are absulutely hysterical, especially Jack Black (who in response to a request for "I just called to say I love you" replies, 'Sir, do you even know your daughter - wait, she's not in a coma is she? We don't sell crap here, go to the mall...'). And through the course of the movie the go through a bunch of Top 5's (the film revolves around the main character's Top 5 break ups of all time).

So basically a Top 5 is an easy way to get a conversation going - it's your own personal "best of whatever" and works especially well once you find a common interest (like music or movies or british comedy series starring Rowan Atkinson).

Seriously, see the movie, you'll laugh a lot and you'll get a little freaked by how well they depict normal guys and how annoying we can be sometimes.

So - I started out with glam rock songs, just for the heck of it really, if you want to post a different Top 5 that's cool, too.

Peace,

NK

Just music, or free for all?

Ok, here goes... top 5 cover versions:

5. Crash Test Dummies perform Britney Spears' (sp?) Baby One More Time (absolutely hysterical)
4. Oasis performs the Beatles' I Am The Walrus
3. Emm Gryner performs Blur's Song 2
2. Tori Amos performs Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit
1. Emm Gryner performs Def Leppard's Pour Some Sugar On Me

That about the right idea? And was Bon Jovi really glam? I thought they were just a hair band... B-)

Anything goes with a Top 5, though the examples in the film mostly relate to music (top 5 side 1 track 1's or top 5 best songs for a Monday morning for example).

Interesting choice of covers...I'm not sure if I've enough knowledge about covers to add a list of my own, however you've raised an interesting point and perhaps one that deserves a survey...

Is Bon Jovi a glam rock band or a hair band?

I have always equated those two together - glam rock being all about the make up and the hair and the sparkly spandex. However, if my pop music history isn't too bad, glam rock started in the 70's and included acts like David Bowie, right? So in that sense maybe Bon Jovi is just a hair band. What is the difference, in your opinion?

Here is a Top 5 that we should be able to have a little fun with:

Top 5 Worst Sequels of Good Originals

1. Jaws 4
2. Superman 4
3. Star Trek 5
4. Highlander 2 (what happened to 'there can be only one'?)
5. Rocky 5
