Yovani Gallardo... the OTHER top pitching prospect

Postby B-Chad » Wed May 02, 2007 2:46 am

All of the talk of Tim Lincecum (and rightfully so) and no one seems to be noticing the nice little line Yovani Gallardo is throwing together down in AAA for the Brewers. 3-1 2.70 ERA 30 IP sub 1.00 WHIP with 8 walks to 42 K's! When are the Brewers going to give this young man a chance to shine at the major league level. I understand he got roughed up in the spring, but for a team that could win the Central, and for a pitcher that appears to be maxing out at AAA, it seems like now would be as good of time as any to call him up. Anyone hearing anything about him?

Who do you bench?

Sheets - (2-2) 4.25 ERA / 1.40 Whip / 16k / 6 BB
Capuano - (4-0) 3.21 ERA / 1.25 Whip / 21k / 13 BB
Bush - (2-2) 6.23 ERA / 1.45 Whip / 26k / 5 BB
Vargas - (2-0) 3.68 ERA / 1.50 Whip / 29k / 8 BB
Suppan - (4-2) 2.55 ERA / 1.18 Whip / 22k / 7 BB

The only real possibility is Bush, and he hasn't be that bad, just getting hit a bit early. Thats a great rotation so don't look for Gallardo anytime soon. Gallardo will not come up unless there is an injury

That's exactly the problem. The rotation has been very good. I agree that it probably will take an injury...

Has there been any talk of Gallardo going the Johan route - getting some time in the pen?

Honestly, the rotation has been pitching well, but I was curious about the bullpen route for the immediate as well. Also, utlimately, I really wonder how long Claudio Vargas can be successful with a 1.50 WHIP.

Oh yeah... and it seems like they'd want him to see major league pitching before Ben Sheets inevidably finds his way to the DL.

I wouldn't be surprised if he pitched the whole year in AAA barring an injury from one of the Brewer's starting 5.

As stated above, their rotation has been lights out thus far.

Note: Bush will perform better as the season progresses. His 6.00+ era is a mix of bad luck and some really rough single inning rallies.

I think it will take a significant injury to one of the starting 5 for him to get a call up. If Sheets, Cappy, Suppan, Bush or Vargas were to be hurt, i think that Carlos Villanueva would be the first one called to take a spot in the rotation.

The "Bullpen Route" isn't that plausible either..

Gallardo would have to come into the game in the 7th inning only because Turnbow/Cordero have both been very good so far.. Most of Milwaulkee's starters are lasting at least through the 6th in their starts so ...

Gallardo has no place to go.
