I have a big problem with YouTube lately.

About 6 months ago, YouTube's most-viewed videos of all time were mostly quite good. Many were original videos submitted by members that were clever, funny, or interesting. Many of these videos had also been on the site for a long time, a year or more in many cases and had racked up an impressive number of views.

But in that time, there must have been a demographic change or something. The number 2 most viewed video is an Avril Levign music video that I can only describe as "brain numbing." Number 3? A My Chemical Romance video. Six is video AD posted, titled Porn XXX and starts as a porn, only to cut to a yelling madman with a goatee followed by an agonizing four minutes of "My Little Pony." Also in the top videos is a rap video sampling Supertramp's "Breakfast In America," two Beyonce videos and an Akon video. Most of these have been submitted in the last few months and have generated views in the double-digit millions. The only video that seems safe at the top spot is that "Evolution of Dance" but the Avril video is definitely gaining quickly.

Another big surprise... also included in the most-viewed is the original 1984 music video for "Summer of '69" complete with comments by pre-teens proclaiming its awesomeness. I fear for this generation.

So I digress; YouTube has turned into MTV5 or whatever.

Agreed. Six months ago, you could actually find good user-generated content that was worth a darn, but now Youtube has evolved into the web form of TiVo. I think UGC, and viral video as a whole, is hitting the wall and you'll see a good deal of startups in the space start to go through the shakeout phase. There is premium UGC on Revver and on Blip.tv but some of it just seems too offbeat or too hip for its own good. But whatever the case, I doubt you can build a business around viral video anymore unless you had some ground-breaking technology to build around. I think in 2-3 years time, Youtube will become nothing more than a fad, in my opinion, just given how it'll be tricky to establish a seasoned business model around it (i.e. monetization of videos) and because big media companies are trying out their own Youtube killer syndication platforms in the near future.

Nah, I just have a quiet interest in viral video and that's all. I'm frankly too good to work in the wild, wacky world of viral video. ;7

That's great. I love when people take something that's been done and done and done for years and then figure out a new way to change it up.

Good stuff.
