I saw that rotoworld did not think that thise was a wise move because Willy Mo Pena and Stephen Smitherman could be good filler outfielders. Neither Pena nor Smitherman had respectable numbers last season.
For the amount that they signed him for, adding Vander Wal is a good addition.

Pena was a fairly highly touted prospect at one point, but if I remember correctly he signed a messed up contract saying that he had to stay in the majors, and couldn't be sent to the minors. And so far he has yet to really get any consistent playing time except for the end of last season. And it appears he'll continue to be just as useless.

God move for Reds a decent vet in the mix of all those young unproven guys surrounding JR who is not mr dependable
