I think it makes a lot of sense, considering that Guillen and Taylor are gone. Towards the end of the season last year, they were playing a AA second baseman in the OF. Plus they just had another OF prospect get shot and killed.
I think they were getting pretty thin in the OF. I didn't read the story but I imagine that Vanderwal is coming off the bench as usual. He'll will be Griffey/Kearns/Dunn insurance.
Thinking about it now, They probably should have gotten a better insurance policy but Vander Wal has a decent stick, and in that park .. hmmm
