I think it makes a lot of sense, considering that Guillen and Taylor are gone. Towards the end of the season last year, they were playing a AA second baseman in the OF. Plus they just had another OF prospect get shot and killed.
I think they were getting pretty thin in the OF. I didn't read the story but I imagine that Vanderwal is coming off the bench as usual. He'll will be Griffey/Kearns/Dunn insurance.

Thinking about it now, They probably should have gotten a better insurance policy but Vander Wal has a decent stick, and in that park .. hmmm :-)

I saw that rotoworld did not think that thise was a wise move because Willy Mo Pena and Stephen Smitherman could be good filler outfielders. Neither Pena nor Smitherman had respectable numbers last season.

For the amount that they signed him for, adding Vander Wal is a good addition.

Pena was a fairly highly touted prospect at one point, but if I remember correctly he signed a messed up contract saying that he had to stay in the majors, and couldn't be sent to the minors. And so far he has yet to really get any consistent playing time except for the end of last season. And it appears he'll continue to be just as useless.
