Is Carlos Delgado a future Hall of Famer?

Postby janssenlbd » Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:13 am

I got into this debate with a friend. Barring major injury, He'll probably finish his career with around 500 HR 1600 RBI. I found it suprising that he has been an all-star only twice. Is this guy a future Hall of Famer?

Probably. I'd say a few more seasons of the Delgado we saw last year and he will probably make it. He's borderline as it is now. Pad those stats and he's in.

Same here. If he doesn't implode in the next season or 2 I think he gets in.

I would say no. The 500 homer milestone is not as uncommon as it once was. Several players are going to pass it this year, all of whom will be near Delgado's hall of fame class. D has been consistent, but never dominating. I'd say Palmeiro has a better chance, but neither will make it.

I'm also going to disagree. In the era of inflated HR totals, not as many power hitters will get should get in. Among active 1B right now, Delgado's behind Giambi, Big Hurt, Thome, and Helton (not necessarily in that order). I have a hard time seeing 5 1B from the same era all getting in...

Provided he has a few more 30/100 seasons in him, I'm inclined to think he will get in.

From Baseball Reference:

Black Ink: Batting - 8 (272) (Average HOFer ≈ 27)
Gray Ink: Batting - 115 (176) (Average HOFer ≈ 144)
HOF Standards: Batting - 38.0 (161) (Average HOFer ≈ 50)
HOF Monitor: Batting - 100.5 (141) (Likely HOFer > 100)

So it looks like Delgado still has some work left if hes going to make it. Id lean towards no.

The way he is playing right now, he is about to be a BN.
