he was held out of the lineup again today due to inflammed colon. how big of a problem could this become in the future?

sounds like he has ulcerative colitis...

if this is the case, his career is pretty much over

That is absolutely false. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic, but manageable condition. There are plenty of medications, therapies, and diet changes that make it nothing more than a nuisance. With treatment, flare-ups still happen, but sometimes you can go months or years without an incident. It is nowhere near a career threatening condition.

At any rate, he doesn't even have ulcerative colitis. He has diverticulitis, another chronic condition managed by diet change and sometimes medication. Also nothing career threatening.

True; when I read that Griffey had diverticulitis, I did some research:

Diverticulitis is a common disease of the bowel, in particular the large intestine. Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches (diverticula) on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed.

An initial episode of acute diverticulitis is usually treated with conservative medical management, including bowel rest (ie, nothing by mouth), IV fluid resuscitation, and broad-spectrum antibiotics which cover anaerobic bacteria and gram-negative rods. However, recurring acute attacks or complications, such as peritonitis, abscess, or fistula may require surgery, either immediately or on an elective basis.

It seems that diverticulitis patients may suffer some serious complications, but I think Griffey may be young enough to avoid that with a proper diet and simply deal with the occasional symptoms.

Haha, seriously.

I have him in a money league; not worth much to me but at this point who knows when he'll actually make a start or not. I still believe that when he plays, he produces. But still, his ass problems shouldn't be my concern but unfortunately... they are :-b
