Bought some at the liquor store just now. They're quite good.
Looks like it worked!
I've found that best (and likely most effective) commercials are the one's a lot of people hate. It doesn't matter if YOU don't buy the product... people are talking about it and that's leaps and bounds over every Ford commercial I've ever seen.
Did you know when Mento's switched to those campy, early 90's commercials ("Mentos: The Freshmaker!") their sales went up over 5000%?
Too bad the sound is dreadful with this one, but yeah, who could forget such classic Mentos commercials.
I distinctly remember people HATING those commercials. "They're so dumb and cheesy!" Those people don't understand the genius and difficulty behind advertising.
I personally like the one with the guy in a suit who sits on a bench marked "WET PAINT" so he rolls around on the bench and gives his shirt stripes and a roll of Mentos is boisterously displayed by the commercial's respective protagonist to an observer as an explanation for his actions.
And I found it interesting that those same people absolutely despised the rollout of Mentos' "hipper" commercials thereafter to the point they wished they had the Mentos freshmaker ads back. Personally, I just loved it for the catchy jingle.
I couldn't find the Wet Paint one off Youtube as everywhere you look there's a badly made spoof of the old Mentos commercials whenever you search for Mentos commercials.
Anyone remember Gheorge Muresan? That 7' 7" Romanian center drafted in the 90's by the Washington Bullets, but was most remembered as a B-rate entertainer? I found this commercial to be hilarious way back in 1997:

I'm fairly certain that Weird Al Yankovic owns the copyright on that, and he might have bought it from Jerry Lewis who had the rights willed to him by a family that came from a long line of court jesters.
