I'm having this debate with my roomate as to who is more of a Yankee between Pettitte and Matsui. I chose the Pettite side because he has played 10 years with the Yanks and was always in their system. He contends that Matsui has played his entire career with the Yanks and should be considered "more of a Yankee". In other words, who has "earned their pinstripes"?

I honestly think the whole idea of having to "earn your stripes" is terrible. The homegrown guys get an automatic pass whereas free agents like A-Rod and Giambi have to have a "defining moment" in order to be accepted by the fans. I don't buy into it. So in answer to your question, I guess the short version would be "I don't know." Sorry.

When does a player know that he has 'earnt his pinstripes'? It is a stupid suggestion really
