Claudio Vargas yielded two runs -- one earned -- and struck out a career-high 11 in six innings Wednesday in a win over the Pirates.

The Brewers are going to have to stop pushing back Vargas' outings, as he's struck out 20 in his two starts to date. With no off days coming up, Vargas will make his next start Monday (rotoworld)

What do you guys think? He's always flirted with being a quality fantasy property - could this be a sign of things to come?

I was at the game today and he looked dirty.

He did pitch himself into (and out of) several jams today. I'm taking a chance on him in a few deep leagues... but I'm not going too crazy about him yet.

Had an impressive spring as I recall too. Worth keeping an eye on. Wait, did I just say that about Claudio Vargas? :-?

I've been impressed. I had my doubts, and quite honestly I wanted Carlos Villanueva to take his rotation spot, but no longer. I hope he keeps it up, because he makes our rotation pretty strong from top to bottom. I don't think I'll be jumping to pick him up after 2 starts (and 1 terrible relief appearance), but I'll be keeping an eye on him.

He had a nice stretch last year too. I've been watching him, but I haven't made a move for him yet. He's been racking up the K's!! I'm just not sure about him. :-?

he had a 4.12 ERA and 1.21 WHIP on the road last year and Maddux is a very good pitching coach that has improved the K rate and lowered the walk rate on a lot of pitchers. I had Vargas in my lineup for both of his good starts and am a believer in him.

Not sure I'd roster him in a shallow league but he should be on a team in a deep league.

his two starts came against the Pirates and Marlins, who are among the top 5 teams for striking out.
Strikeouts for '07:
1. FLO 135
5. PIT 123

So that may be contributing to Claudio's strikeout totals.
