It's notstupid at all. If he misses three starts it is perfect for the Mariners to put him on the DL. If he misses two, then DLing him would cause the Mariners to miss a start from thier best pitcher and a chance at a win. I'm sure the Mariners care more about the possible win.

From the Seattle Times:

April 23, 2007

Felix to DL

Posted by Geoff Baker at 03:05 PM

The Mariners made the no-brainer move of putting Felix Hernandez on the 15-day DL moments ago, meaning they won't have to send anyone out to the minors to make room for Cha-Seung Baek to start tonight's game. Baek arrived in Texas last night from Tacoma and joined his teammates here before the pre-game stretch.

Hernandez will be eligible to come off the DL on May 4.

He played catch here today for about eight minutes from a distance of 75 feet. But the Mariners weren't going to start him next weekend and likely wouldn't gain more than a couple of days by keeping him off the DL. This move also enables the team to keep their current stable of pitchers here. Seattle's starting rotation is in a shambles and relievers could be a hot commodity in coming days for this club.

I hope we're getting the real story here...but who knows? Maybe he threw a pitch and let off a yell, "OWWWWEE."

Yahoo---Hernandez will play catch again on Tuesday and on another day, then have three or four bullpen sessions before returning to the rotation.

"I felt pretty good today," Hernandez said on Monday night. "No pain. But I didn't feel too strong. I was nervous. I had to just relax and not throw too hard."

Asked if he was relieved that the injury wasn't more serious, he said, "To feel no pain in my elbow? I was really happy."

Manager Mike Hargrove said the Mariners considered keeping Hernandez on the active roster so he could return sooner but the team decided placing him on the 15-day DL was the best option. ;-D
