The DVD burner came with the base package, so I can't dump it.

As far as HD and RAM and processor speed...what should I reasonably look to go for?

You should be able to customize every component of a Dell laptop; otherwise they're going after you with the "value meal" which will end up costing you more.

Why not try calling Dell? I've heard people get considerably better deals over the phone, especially if you're timid about a budget.

Heh, I heard the opposite. I heard a few times of people spending way too much when they order over the phone because they don't know exactly what to get. I find it easier to look at everything laid out on a website, but that's just me.

I just threw together an Inspiron on the Dell site for kicks. If you take Office out, just get regular McAfee (instead of the 2 year thing), and go with the default 1 year warranty, it's under $700. Personally I would do it that way and see if you can get a student discount on Word at your school, or just get Office "another way."

I'm with on all that except the call thing; it's surprising to me as well since you would think that they'd try to stick it to the people who call since they don't know what they're doing, but there's a guy here at work that swears by it. I've never tried it myself, but I'd like to build a computer on the website, and then call like I don't know what I'm doing, and try to get more stuff for the same price.

But then I'd have to tell the guy at the phone right before I give him my card number, "SIKE!"

Do people say sike anymore? I don't think they say "not" anymore, but I always liked sike. There was once a dispute in college over the correct spelling; someone was positive that it was spelled 'psych' but I don't buy that for a second.

I think I said this before, but I'll say it again. I would go with an HP. I shopped around all the big sites (Dell, Hp, Sony, etc.) and HP had the best price for the package that I needed for school. My roommate had a Dell that crashed on him midway through the year, and while that can happen to any computer, it just solidified my preference.

The thing about a deal is that it can literally change day-to-day, but HP is worth a look. The only brand I'd actively avoid is probably Gateway, although that probably wouldn't be the end of the world either. Sony and Toshiba are certifiably over-priced.

ive known many of people that have had problems with their dells in the past, but i also know more people with dell's than any other brand so many its just the odds. but they "overheat", have terrible battery life, and my girlfriend had to get 3 hard drives after they corrupted for seemingly no reason.

What's the difference between a DELL Inspiron and an XPS?

I initially thought that the XPS came with the TrueLife Glossy screen but now I see that the feature is optional on the Inspiron. Why is the XPS so much more expensive? What would you recommend going with?
