Astro's select Taveras in the Rule 5 draft that was held in december.
Taveras, 21, hit .282 (112x397) with two home runs and 35 runs batted in for Class A Kinston of the Carolina League this season. He stole 57 bases, tops in the Cleveland organization in 2003 and the second-best total in the Carolina League, while also leading Kinston with 64 runs scored. Taveras was only caught stealing 12 times, and in five minor league seasons, he has 202 stolen bases and has been caught just 52 times. The 6-0, 160-pound outfielder bats and throws right-handed and was originally signed by the Indians as a non-drafted free agent from Tenares, Dominican Republic, on May 27, 1999.
