I am not a fan of either the Cards or the Cubs.
What has happened to Prior is heart breaking in my book. He was the total package. He had electric stuff and knew how to pitch. He could work the count to get a strikeout. He could get a doubleplay ball when a man was on first. He was not just a thrower like WOOD. Maybe I bought into the 'hype', but to me, he looked to be destined for the HOF early in his career.
I am not sure that "overhyped" is the right word. I think that people just RECOGNIZED his insane talent.
Per thebaseball cube, Prior won the following awards:
1999 - Freshman 2nd team All-America UT
2000 - Summer League First-Team All-American SP
2001 - Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, 1st team College All-American P, Pac-10 Conference All-Star P, Baseball America College Player of the Year, Golden Spikes Award
2002 - NL Rookie of the Year (Voting Rank: #7)
2003 - Chicago Cubs Player of the Year, Baseball America First-Team Major League All-Star SP, NL MVP (Voting Rank: #9), NL Cy Young Award (Voting Rank: #3), Played in MLB All-Star Game
That doesn't seem to be hype. BTW.. How much of a bitter A$$ are you sportsaddict if you really root for players to get hurt? Your team just won the series. People say that Cardinal fans are some of the most intelligent fans in all of baseball. Maybe not
