NEW YORK - Johnny Damon said today that his strained right calf has made significant progress. The Yankees' center fielder was able to take batting practice and plans on making himself available to contribute in some way for tomorrow's game against Baltimore at Yankee Stadium.
Manager Joe Torre didn't rule out using him as a pinch hitter in tonight's series opener but that he'd like to stay away from it if possible.
"There was massive improvement from last night," said Damon, who left Monday's season opener against Tampa Bay after five innings and sat out yesterday's series finale.
Damon has never been on the disabled list since he began his major-league career in 1995, and now, unless there's a setback, it doesn't look like he will have to go on the 15-day DL for this injury.
