Lets talk Ryan Theriot

Postby Guaranteed Loser » Fri Apr 06, 2007 6:06 pm

It seems to me that this kid is getting no respect.

His line from 53 games last year is respectable, including 13sb and a 328 avg.

He looks to be the super utility infielder AND outfielder for the Cubs this year, and could see quite a few at bats.

I am not saying he is worth a spot in a 12 team league, but in a deep league or NL only, I think he has value for his position eligibility (should have ss, 2b and OF soon) and for his speed.

I am unable to find anything positive about Theriot on the web (including the Cafe) , and I am basically looking to be convinced that I should pick this kid up as a solid bench player in a 20 team daily changes league.

Any help appreciated.

Agree completely. I took a chance on him in the later rounds of a 15 team league that uses an additional MI position. If he was to play every day or even close he'd be a steal... but he's only seen three at-bats so far this season and one appearance as a pinch-runner.

He had such a great spring too... definitely a guy to keep an eye on.

0/3 with one SB.. better than some of my other players on that team, now that I think about it. :-b

Theriot success makes one wonder why the Cubs went out and signed Mark DeRosa. Ryan looked pretty impressive and wasn't even given a chance to play. Given Lou Pinella's history I think it's only a matter of time before he gets an opportunity. Sweet lou was singing his praises all spring.

He's blocked by DeRosa (whose had one good year in his career) and Izturis for playing time on the infield and there are only 4 OF on the roster (one of whom the injury-prone Floyd) and bats RH (compared to the LH Floyd and Jones) meaning potential starts in the OF against tough LH (already one game as a defensive replacement).

Throw in his batting average improvement since he ditched switch-hitting and his SB potential, and I think you have the makings of another Ryan Freel-type player. He's not there yet, but I'm watching in my mixed leagues due to his SB potential.

I say give the kid another year and he should be a viable fantasy option. Unless the cubbies are totally out of it this season he could see some major time.

Don't you guys love his name?

I bet he's The Riot of the clubhouse :-b

His nickname is actually Theriot the Chariot.

I prefer The Riot myself, but either is pretty damn cool

I agree as well. I can't see why you'd pay one guy a suitcase full of money when you have a young guy who appears to be reasonably likely to put up similar numbers for a shaving kit full of money. I guess that the depth is nice too for a longer haul but it seems a waste to have Theriot sit on his kiester all year.

I like this kid

I think he has good sb potential and some pop in his bat.

an injury anywhere on the field except P and C could open things up for him.

Came in as a pinch runner for Cliff Floyd, scored on a nice slide to avoid the tag, and walked in his AB.

2 appearances at OF now as defensive replacement for Floyd
