This is a nice quick illustration of the difference. I would take one word out of your sentence: "unfair"
With a bad trade, 1 person got better. It's not unfair, IMO, because everyone else in the league had the same opportunity as the guy that got better. Unfair to me means something that's available to one person and not available to the others. Not the case in a trade. All owners are free to trade with all other owners.
Saying that is a bit dangerous in this thread because I don't mean to say "fleece people all you can". IMO, fleecing just leads to you having bad relationships with the other owners in your league, which will not be productive for your trade chances in the future. A fleecer gets alientated and isolated in the long run, so it's in your interests not to do that. You might win this season, but you'll be on your own next year, and people will expect to be able to fleece you when you're desperate for something. And it's in your interests not to constantly offer crappy deals for the same reason.
Anonymous one year leagues of course need some protection, but leagues that will be ongoing and all of the owners are known should not have it because you won't have noobs and you're all forced to deal with the consequences of your actions for a long time. If you're viewed as a jerk you won't be successful over the long haul.
