Mar 31 Dukes was named Tampa Bay's starting center fielder on Saturday, a welcome reward for the 22-year-old outfielder who had an up-and-down year in the minors last season. Dukes was suspended for the final month of 2006 at Triple-A Durham and was arrested in January for marijuana possession. He hit .367 with three doubles, a triple and seven RBIs in spring training, earning a roster spot.
Advice: Dukes was named the starter in center because Rocco Baldelli is still slowed by a sore right hamstring and will be used as the designated hitter until he can play the field. "It's been a long time coming. It's been a journey," Dukes said.
- You have to wonder, IF he does well, will that translate into him taking over at DH displacing Gomes?
