First of all, I need to give a mention to one of my all time favorites:
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Douglas Adams book is a once evry other year read. Easily one of the funniest books Ive ever had the pleasure of comming across.
On a much deeper note, Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond is interesting.
Lastly, I am a huge soccer (football) fan, and I just got The History of Soccer - the dvd set. Absolutely brilliant. The way it shows the development of the sport in different social, political, economic, and geological settings is enthralling. This is similar to the Baseball series that was recently on PBS a couple years ago, but with a larger emphasis on how the sport helped shape so many cultures. Almost a must see for history buffs.
