Cantu a Red Sox??

Postby kcbrost » Fri Mar 30, 2007 3:16 am

The rumors in Fort Myers is that Jorge Cantu will be starting 2nd base for the Red Sox by opening day...Devil Rays are willing to part with him?? a big mistake in my opinion I hope the rumors come true Red Sox could make the team alot better with at 2nd.

Cantu is terrible and he's been rumored to be on the outs with Tampa for a while. Tampa wants to give stud prospect BJ Upton the job at 2nd base. He has much much more upside than Cantu does. This trade makes sense for Tampa, hopefully for their sake, they get an arm in return.

I hope the Red Sox don't do this. I agree that they should give Pedroia a chance before they start pulling desparate moves like this. Its not like Cantu has been lighting up a storm.

I actually wouldn't mind Cantu coming to Boston. Pedroia, to me, is like Freddy Sanchez and David Eckstein. He will get some base hits but that's about it. I know we have good power but Cantu had a good season a couple years back and he seems like a more complete player than Pedroia.

We're talking a number 9 hitter in Pedroia...
He barely hit over his 180 weight in his call up last season, and is zipping along at a .211 clip in the Grapefruit League.
Not saying give up on the kid by any means, but Cantu's not a bad pickup, especially for the likes of an expendable Piniero, and TB needs a closer.
Jorge's only 25 and missed a pile of games last year due to injury - hard to believe his best days are behind him.

I wouldn't mind the move if all we had to give up was Piniero

Why Boston would want a guy that will lead the league in GIDP's and can't take a walk is beyond me!! ;-)

Seriously though, it might not be a bad idea, but I think they'd be better off sticking with the kid!!

Since when was Pineiro a closer?
