Not to take up for him a whole lot, but he did take them with picks 95 and 98. Their ADPs are around 130 for both of them, so he didn't reach as early as you might be suggesting considering his next 2 picks wouldn't have been until 119 and 122. I guess he just couldn't take the chance of waiting til Round 10 and 11, considering his other competitors pretty much already knew he was extremely high on both of them.

He announced to everyone before the draft started that he was going to take them.
I was like, "okay."

I planned on taking Kendrick with one of my next 2 picks.

Yeah, I agree here...
I've been drafting Kendrick in the 10th, and I took Markakis in the 12th, so he's in the general region of where they are going.
And as Rump stated, the whole fantasy baseball community knows how high he is on them, so if he wanted them on his team, he had to act when he did or he likely would have ended up with neither.
I'm not a big fan of Reyes at #2 to start out, just because it puts you in a hole for HR and RBI. But then Funston goes and grabs Suzuki in the 3rd? What was he thinking? That's got to be a kiss of death right there. His love affair with speed is going to be the downfall of his team.
