Yeah, I'll miss him though. The only player I've ever called by his first name. Better than Ozzie Smith too, although he probably won't make the hall of fame.
It is contingent on Omar passing a physical, so it isn't quite official.
There's no resolving an Omar vs. Ozzie debate. Omar was a better hitter, but Ozzie stole more bases. It all comes down to the glove, and there's no way to prove who was better either way. I've seen them both and, at worse, Omar was his equal, and I've heard many baseball people say Omar was better. It doesn't matter though, it's all perception, and the common man and the typical baseball reporter won't look beyond the "no one better than Ozzie" myth, so the point is moot.

Still, he was a great guy and a joy to watch.
A total class guy.....and just the wickedest of gloves...so smooth
If I were playing third base and my mother were rounding third with the run that was going to beat us, I'd trip her. Oh, I'd pick her up and brush her off and say, 'Sorry, Mom,' but nobody beats me.

Omars not even close to Ozzie.
Hitting they were close, but Omar wasn't the better hitter.
Ozzie career ops+ 87
Omar career ops+ 84
Add 300 more sb, and Ozzie was more a offensive factor. The defense isn't close.
Career range factor Ozzie 5.03 (staggering) to league avg of 4.10 Career range factor Omar 4.45 to a league avg of 4.25
Ozzie had 11 years of at least 450 assists (620) record
Omar had 1 year off 450 assists
As good as Omars range was, it was light years behind Ozzies.
And yea i saw both, and Ozzie was better just using my eyes.

I have yet to see a stat that adaquetly tells you how good of a fielder a player is. This is one of those cases that there's no way to prove either way who's right, so I'm not even going to start getting into it.

They might not be accurate, but tell me getting 450+ assists 11 times to 1 isn't a coincidence? Thats not a stat. He got to those balls more often then Omar.

Nice post Hootie.
I do believe that proves the point.
