December 8, 2003 SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Padres offered free agent Kenny Lofton a contract on Monday, hoping to make him their center fielder and leadoff batter.
General manager Kevin Towers declined to divulge the length and financial details of the offer. The Padres are believed to be competing with the New York Yankees for Lofton.
``We just hope he wants to play in the National League, and hopefully he wants to be on the West Coast,'' Towers said.
The GM said Lofton and his agent want to make a quick decision.
Lofton split last year between Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cubs, hitting .296 and stealing 30 bases. He is a former teammate of Padres outfielder Brian Giles, obtained from the Pirates in August.
The Padres traded center fielder Mark Kotsay to the Oakland Athletics late last month for All-Star catcher Ramon Martinez and disgruntled outfielder Terrence Long.
Third baseman Sean Burroughs was moved into the leadoff spot in late August and finished with a .286 average.

That still cracks me up. Lol.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
... something is going to have to give ... I know Giles isn't going anywhere ...
I best edumacted guess are Nady and Long get shipped ...
Good luck with that one. But I guess if Nady is included, Long could be an expensive pinch runner for somebody.
And you forgot to include Nevin. That's a crowded OF/1B. Lofton would be a nice addition. His presence seems to make teams good for some reason. The Indians, Braves, Giants, and Cubs all had big playoff years with Lofton on their team. Hmmmmmm maybe Toronto should pick him up, shift Wells to left, and demote Reed Johnson to the bench. But it's not like we're gonna make the playoffs anyway, with Boston and NY one-upping each other throughout the off-season...
"Jack, will you call me, if you're able?"
"I've got your phone number written, in the back of my Bible."
He didn't forget Nevin, he left him out on purpose. My best guess is the only time Nevin ever sets foot in the OF again, is in a shallow pop up to RF and in warmups. Much less chance of him getting injured if he never steps past the dirt on the basepaths.
Nevin will be at first 85% of the time
... Klesko will be in the OF 90%.. of the time
Giles will be in the OF 99.9% of the time ... and now Lofton ..
looks like Nady and Long will be a very expensive bench.
at worst KT will trade Long for your grandmas bed side slippers, just to clear salary for a starter ...
