Palmeiro to the Bronx?

Postby Gang Green » Mon Dec 08, 2003 9:34 pm

With Palmeiro officially cutting ties to the Rangers, it looks as though he could end up in the Bronx. With Nick Johnson gone, the Yankees need a DH/1st baseman. Palmeiro's sweet swinging power stroke from the left side is tailormade for Yankee stadium. Also, with Giambi's creaky knees, you will need someone to play significant time at 1B. At present, the Yankees don't have any other 1st baseman on their roster other than Giambi. They sure as heck wouldn't have to worry about any severe offensive dropoff at 1B if Giambi goes out with an injury for a prolonged period of time.
With J.T. Snow re-signing with the Giants, there goes the only other viable option in my opinion. The Yanks did resign Ruben Sierra, who can still swing the lumber, but he will probably strictly come off the bench.
Their lineup next year could look like this:
SS- Jeter
LF- Williams
RF- Sheffield
1B- Giambi
C- Posada
CF- Matsui
2B- Soriano
DH- Palmeiro
3B- Boone
They can basically go righty/lefty right down the entire lineup. If/when the Red Sox get A-Rod, it will surely be Clash of the Titans in the AL East.

Just what the Yankees need. An old, poor defensive first baseman that will hit .260.

He'll probably go to the Angels.

The facts that Palmeiro is old and has turned down a trade to a contender in the past does bother me. I just don't see anybody out there who is a better alternative to Palmeiro.

Palmeiro I presume would primarily play DH and he did hit 38 HRS and 112 RBI's last year. Not too bad for an over the hill guy. But I do agree that a poor old first baseman can cost you dearly in the playoffs.

Or a young bad-kneed one. So where do the Yanks turn? Spezio?

i think the yankees should go after travis lee.. yes hes a streaky hitter but hes probably the best defensive first baseman available and hes not a terrible hitter .. u dont need palmeiros offense and the other name ive heard being mentioned is speizio and he would be useless on the yankees hes bad defensively in my opinion and he is average offensively.. travis lee would be cheap and do a very good job as backup first baseman/occasional dh

Well that one flew under the radar..........
Anyway, Travis Lee is an interesting name but Palmeiro's name has been on George's lips here in NY for a while. Palmeiro is also a Yankee killer. He actually has a .444 batting average at Yankee stadium. There are two things George loves to acquire. Yankee killers and ex-Mets. I know he hasn't had a large amount of at bats at Yankee Stadium (Hootie), but I think its worth noting. Anyway, with George in a frenzy over losing the World Series, don't look for any low visibility names to come to the Bronx this offseason.

Is this merely speculation about what the Yankees might do, or is there some substantive basis behind this? If it happens, Palmeiro would be a nice fantasy pickup.

Not much love for a guy who's hit at least 38 home runs and 104 rbi for 9 consecutive years.
