Yep.
READ MONEYBALL![/quote]
I haven't read Moneyball yet but read a short article about Billy Beane's philosophy on SI - basically about what kind of players he looks for (pitchers with high SO/BB ratio, batters with high walk ratio) Is that the jist of the book or is there a lot more than that?
Btw, why did Billy Beane write Moneyball?
If I were a sly GM, I would not want to show my cards and let other GMs know what kind of players I want - weakens his bargaining power and adds competition to the limited player pool if the book creates copycat GMs.

5 years at $14.7 mil '03 0.35 mil '04 0.7 mil '05 2.9 mil '06 4.3 mil '07 5.6 mil
Plus whichever agent did the contract had no performance incentives and escape clauses included, if I am correct. We're talking about a potential second rounder getting paid 700K next year
In '04 he makes about 4% what Delgado makes (18.5 mil)
I remember when Toronto signed Wells and Hinske before the season started last year. Basically the same contract for both of them. We're stuck with Hinske now but at least we have Wells wrapped up. I can pretty much guarantee that if he continues to play like this he'll have his contract re-negotiated. I'm not sure if holdouts work the same in baseball as they do in football, but I have the feeling I'll found out soon enough.
And Prior won't be making $2M in 2005/6, he'll have voided those years out of his contract. But $1.6M is a steal in '04. It's amazing how low some contracts are for great players (Prior, Wells, Pujols, Gagne - combined $2.45M) and how ridiculous some are for worse players (Rusty Greer, Chan Ho Park, Alex Rodriguez....OK basically the entire Rangers roster)

Worse players? Greer is great when healthy and they don't get much better than Arod.
Yes, we have plenty of bad contracts though: Chan Ho and that we're still going to have to pay Van Poppel $3 million next year even though he's not even on the team anymore. There are plenty of bad contracts here, but those 2 stand out the most.
Greer's $9 million would be fine if he was healthy and playing. Looks very bad with him out for last year and probably out for all of next year.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....

Reminds me of Philosophy 101.....if Rusty Greer were to have every part of him surgically replaced, would it still be the same Rusty Greer?

Yeah I originally was going to talk about how Park and Greer were overpaid (Greer was OK, but not worth what he's getting paid even if he was healthy) but I threw in A-Rod because nobody is worth a quarter of a billion dollars. I was going with the Rangers motif, if you will I kinda changed the direction I was going after I said "worse players".
And if every part of Rusty Greer were surgically replaced, he'd a have a new nickname: The Bionic 7.4 Million Dollar Man
