Best Bargain Contracts

Postby Yikes » Mon Dec 08, 2003 7:30 am

Looking over the current contracts of MLB players, I'd have to say Toronto has the best basement bargain contract out there with Vernon Wells.

5 years at $14.7 mil
'03 0.35 mil 8-o
'04 0.7 mil 8-o
'05 2.9 mil
'06 4.3 mil
'07 5.6 mil

Plus whichever agent did the contract had no performance incentives and escape clauses included, if I am correct. We're talking about a potential second rounder getting paid 700K next year

In '04 he makes about 4% what Delgado makes (18.5 mil)
8-o 8-o 8-o

By the way, the contracts website is at:

Yep, it's a good deal for Toronto. ;-D

Soriano's contract is pretty cheap as well. $800,000 8-o

Pujols: $900,000 in 2003, although I think he might be getting a new deal this season?

Prior's is a relative bargain:

2002: $0.25M (+$4.0M signing bonus)
2003: $0.65M
2004: $1.6M
2005: $2.0M
2006: $2.0M

Always miniscule amounts for Oakland stars:

Chavez
2001: $0.5M (+$0.1M signing bonus)
2002: $2.4M
2003: $3.55M
2004: $5.2M

Hudson
2001: $0.5M (+$0.1M signing bonus)
2002: $0.85M
2003: $2.7M
2004: $4.55M
2005: $6.0M option exercised

Zito
2002: $0.5M (+$0.4M signing bonus)
2003: $0.9M
2004: $2.7M
2005: $4.8M
2006: Team option $7.0M
(2002-2005 total is less than Kevin Millwood's one year deal)

Mulder
2002: $0.75M (+$0.2M signing bonus)
2003: $2.6M
2004: $4.4M
2005: $6.0M
2006: Team option $7.25M or $0.25M buyout

In other words the inevitable will be happening to Oakland in 2005/06, or the fabulous trio will be broken up?

prior has the option to void the contract and go to arbitration after 2004. its still a bargain through 2004 though.

Wrong. They're all going to leave the second their contracts run out.
