Orlando Palmeiro was the only free agent offered arbitration by the Cardinals and it's believed he agreed to decline it. The Cardinals offered Hitchock a contract, but it wasn't guaranteed. It's likely that some team will sign him to act as a starter. Cairo was considered expendable because the Cardinals intend to move Bo Hart into his role.

As i've been saying. Hart will not be a starter... ...

I don't know the Cards don't have much cash to throw around and no one seems better suited. Who do you think will start at 2nd for them?

Sadly enough, I think Stl is looking at Alomar. Here's part of an article from the Stl Post:

The Cardinals are still interested in free-agent second baseman Roberto Alomar, who was not offered arbitration by the Chicago White Sox after the club extended a final offer of one year and $3 million to him. Some within the Cardinals organization believe Alomar also could handle the leadoff responsibilities vacated by free agent Fernando Vina. Alomar batted .262 with 22 RBIs and a .336 on-base percentage with the New York Mets last season before being dealt in July to Chicago, where he hit .253 with 17 RBIs and a .330 on-base percentage.

Good god, he'll probably turn out to be another Tino. :~(

Alomar wouldn't be bad defensively. It is just that because of his name STL would have to overpay for him. And there is no way he should bat higher than 7th. I'd rather start Hart and apply the $ difference to a SP.

i think walt indicated in a recent interview that alomar was not a possibility unless he was willing to sign a cheap contract. i dont think we will see him in stl. i dont really have the slightest idea who they are looking at though. pitching is the priority and they are looking to fill that first. whatever is left over goes to finding a 2b and lf.
