It's not the same Nomar. :-[

Last year Nomar hit 340 1st pitch. In last 3 years it's 337. Sounds good right? Well, since you swing at 1st pitch, it means you won't walk, so your average then becomes your oba as well. As a average, 340 is nice. As a oba, 340 isn't great.

MAD Pudge hit 352 this year, and 384 over the last 3 years.
Nice memory guys. ;-D

Nice to see my memory works. Yeah, Nomar still gets those first-pitch fastballs and he just sprays them. I would like him to be more patient, but what are you gonna do?

You know, fellas, I don't know the league numbers, but I'm willing to betcha that averages while swinging at the first pitch for all players are higher than the league average by a wide margin. Just because Nomar has the patience of a teenager at a whorehouse doesn't mean he excels at it over the league norm. The problem is with swinging at the first pitch is that your average will drop if you do not put the ball in play. Nomar, like most players, do not do as well when the count is in the pitchers favor, so the more he swings at the first pitch the more of an advantage the pitcher will have overall.

You want to know Nomar's problem? On a 3-2 count, his average was an incredible .467 last season. That's amazing. But what's even more amazing he reached that count only 30 times in '03. Right there is the problem with Nomar -- he just doesn't get into enough hitters counts for him to be as successful as he should be. At least in my opinion.
