Not to spoil the Matsui-as-Met party, but does anyone think that Matsui is going to be an average SS at best?
According to ESPN, his Japan numbers are .309 BA, .362 OBP, .486 Slugging
Does anyone actually think he will be able to maintain, let alone improve, those numbers in the bigs? Japanese hitters have never been the greatest at plate discipline (perhaps that's why Ishii and Nomo walk guys like fiends - they aren't used to people taking their pitches), and just as Ichiro and Big Matsui saw declines in OBP and SLG, Little Matsui will as well, leaving him...as an average shortstop pulling down $7 mil per.
I just see this as another bungled Met management move - why not chip in an extra $3 mil for Tejada, a shortstop who has actually won the MVP in the majors for god's sakes?
I certainly wouldn't take Matsui in a fantasy draft ahead of:
A-Rod
Nomar
Jeter
Tejada
Renteria
Furcal
A. Boone (SS eligible in '03, dunno about '04)
O. Cabrera
In fact, I would be very impressed if Matsui matched Cabrera's numbers from last season: .297, 17HR, 80RBI, 24SB. Only difference is that Cabrera got those numbers for $3.3 mil, not $7+. I think this one's gonna come back to haunt the Mets for sure.

solid post, but you forgot, in Shea Stadium?
I agree. Hitters die in Shea.

Keep in mind that those are his career numbers; Matsui's slugging, for instance, has been considerably higher than that recently (last four years: .549, .617, .496, .560). His OBP has been over that mark for seven years now...
One reason i heard Kaz picked NY, is he's tired of being known as little Kaz. He thought by playing in NY, like Hideki, he can change that.
GREEN I agree paying Miggy a few mil more would have been wiser. However, NYM are playing the card Seattle and NYY played. Kaz will generate extra fans, and merchandise, from NY huge asian population. So in a marketing sense, Kaz might actually earn more then Miggy.
